Belvedere House 2026: What's Open During Conservation Works?

Short answer: the interior of Belvedere House is closed for Phase 3 conservation works. The gardens, parkland, Jealous Wall, Visitor Services Centre, restaurant, gift shop and playgrounds are all open. Westmeath County Council expects the house to reopen to the public later in 2026. If your main reason for visiting is to walk through the Georgian rooms, wait a few months. If you're coming for the estate itself, you'll still have a full day out.

What Phase 3 Actually Means

Belvedere House has been undergoing a multi-phase conservation programme. Phases 1 and 2 dealt with the building's structure, roofing and weatherproofing. Phase 3, now underway, is the interior finish work: mechanical and electrical systems upgrade, painting, furnishing and gallery preparation. It's the phase that turns a weatherproofed shell back into a visitable house.

The funding comes from Fáilte Ireland and the EU Just Transition Fund. Westmeath County Council runs the project. The Belvedere Master Plan positions the house as a "cornerstone of Mullingar tourism" and part of Fáilte Ireland's Ireland's Hidden Heartlands brand.

Should You Still Visit?

Honest answer: yes, if you want the estate, the story and the folly. A large majority of what makes Belvedere memorable is outside. The Jealous Wall, the lakeside walks, the gardens, the families-with-kids setup and the views across Lough Ennell are all the outdoor offering, and they don't change when the house interior is closed. Add lunch at the restaurant and a visit to the Jealous Wall and you've got a 3–4 hour day.

If you're travelling specifically for the Georgian interiors — Richard Castle's plasterwork, the period furniture, the Rochfort library — then consider waiting. The official belvedere-house.ie site will confirm the reopening date.

Tip: Admission prices are unchanged during the conservation closure. You're paying for the estate, not just the house interior. If you feel that's unfair, the Heritage Card gives free entry to Belvedere and ~45 other Heritage Ireland sites for a flat annual fee.

When Will the House Reopen?

Westmeath County Council and Heritage Ireland have indicated "later in 2026". No specific date has been published. If you want a notification when the house reopens, subscribe to our newsletter — that's specifically when we'll email.

What This Means for Photography

The best photography at Belvedere has always been outdoors anyway — the Jealous Wall, the walled garden, the lakeshore, the Gothic arch. None of that is affected by the interior closure. If you were planning to photograph the interior for a wedding, period drama or stock library, you'll need to wait or seek separate permission once the house reopens.
